We cannot control our broader environment or the co-created world in which we live. But we can be an active metaphysical force in how things ultimately play out in our own lives because we have free will and the power to manifest our own reality.

No matter what the circumstances, we can bring the power of prayer, healing intention, and transformational energy to any situation or circumstance and thus have a more self-empowered conversation with the deeper layers of reality.

Our mindset, attitudes, beliefs and expectations shape our reality and influence the world around us every moment of every day, but most of us do this unconsciously, without conscious intention or clear direction. And sometimes we allow our self-limiting fears and worries to run wild, creating dark mirages in our minds that eventually take shape in the material world as mishaps of our own creation.

Journaling, saying affirmations, visualizing outcomes, or creating a vision board of what we want to manifest in our lives are all positive first steps toward becoming a more conscious creator. This is not because these practices are inherently magical or metaphysical, but because the process focuses our minds on setting clear intentions and clarifying what we hope to attract.

Working with candles is equally powerful. Communicating our desires to a candle flame is a magical prayer practice and metaphysical technique. It enhances our mental visualization and intention setting with the energy of fire.

The Spiritual Symbolism Of Fire

Fire has always been a powerful symbol and agent in metaphysics, spirituality, and the occult. It is traditionally used in many spiritual practices, rites, ceremonies, and rituals. In various religious and spiritual traditions, fire is also considered a purifying force that cleanses both the body and the soul.

In the Christian tradition, fire is a symbol of divinity and religious zeal. In Hinduism, fire is considered a sacred element and is used in many rituals and ceremonies. The flame represents the inner self and the divine light within. In Buddhism, the flame represents enlightenment and the burning away of ignorance.

Fire is also metaphysically associated with transformation and spiritual growth, removing impurities and allowing for spiritual awakening. It represents the passion and intensity of our emotions that drive us to pursue our goals and dreams. Fire can also signify the burning away of old beliefs and habits, allowing for personal growth and development.

The Spiritual History Of Candles

Ancient civilizations, including the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, used candles in religious ceremonies as a symbol of enlightenment and connection to the divine. The flickering flame was believed to represent the presence of gods and goddesses, providing a guiding light for prayers and offerings.

In many cultures, candles were also used as a tool for meditation, enhancing focus and creating a sacred atmosphere. The act of lighting a candle was considered a ritual in itself, marking the beginning of a spiritual journey or ceremony. The glow of the flame was thought to dispel darkness and negative energies, bringing forth positivity and spiritual enlightenment.

In modern times, the use of candles in spiritual practices has evolved to encompass a wide range of traditions and beliefs, and continues to play an important role in facilitating spiritual self-empowerment and expansion. The practice of lighting candles during rituals, prayers, or meditations is a widespread custom practiced by people of various faiths and spiritual paths.

In addition, the availability of different candle colors and scents has expanded the use of candles in energy work and manifestation rituals. Each color is associated with specific intentions and energies, allowing individuals to personalize their spiritual practices with greater depth and symbolism. In addition, candles infused with essential oils are often incorporated into healing practices to enhance the therapeutic atmosphere and promote relaxation and energetic healing.

Overall, the history of candle use in spiritual practices reflects the timeless importance of this ancient tradition and its enduring relevance in contemporary spirituality. Whether used for divine connection, mindful meditation, manifestation, or energy work, candles continue to be a revered tool for enhancing spiritual experiences and fostering a sense of sacredness in everyday life.

Choosing the Right Candle For Your Practice

If you are looking to incorporate candles into your spiritual practice or energy work, be sure to look beyond the obvious supermarket or gift shop candles. These days, you can find some amazing candles in metaphysical stores and on esoteric websites. Some vendors carry several types of unusual candles with different shapes, colors, and uses. If you are really ambitious and industrious, you can even make your own!

CANDLE SHAPES & SIZES

The size and shape of a candle affects the energy it will emit during your spiritual or metaphysical practice. Carefully considering and choosing the right size and shape of candle will increase the effectiveness and contribute to the success of your practice.

For example, smaller candles are ideal for shorter rituals or simpler intentions, while larger candles should be used for longer practices or when a continuous, steady flame is desired.

Tapered candles are great for directing energy and intentions in a specific direction, while votive candles offer stability and are perfect for longer rituals. Pillar candles provide steady energy and are ideal for focused, prolonged practices.

CANDLE COLORS

When choosing a candle for your spiritual practice or energy work, it is important to understand the symbolic meaning of different candle colors. Each color has its own meaning and energy that can enhance the intention of your practice.

The symbolism of common candle colors include:

BLACK: Black candles symbolize protection, banishing negativity, transformation, and spiritual closure. They are often used to dispel negative energy, remove obstacles, and initiate new beginnings.

BLUE: Blue candles symbolize calm, peace, serenity, intuition, spirituality, and communication with spirits. They are often used to promote relaxation, calm anxiety, and enhance psychic abilities.

GREEN: Green candles represent growth, prosperity, abundance, healing, fertility, and nature. They are often used to attract wealth, promote financial success, and promote well-being.

ORANGE: Orange candles symbolize creativity, enthusiasm, joy, ambition, success, and personal power. They are often used to ignite motivation, increase productivity, and achieve goals.

PINK: Pink candles represent love, compassion, kindness, empathy, forgiveness, and nurturing relationships. They are often used to attract romantic love, foster friendship, and heal emotional wounds.

PURPLE: Purple candles represent royalty, spiritual enlightenment, wisdom, psychic power, and intuition. They are often used to achieve spiritual goals, expand consciousness, and connect with higher realms.

RED: Red candles symbolize passion, love, desire, energy, strength, courage, and vitality. They are often used to attract love, stimulate creativity, and increase motivation.

WHITE: White candles represent purity, innocence, peace, harmony, truth, unity, goodness, and the divine. They are often used for cleansing, protection, consecration, and spiritual awakening.

YELLOW: Yellow candles symbolize intellect, wisdom, knowledge, clarity, communication, and expanding horizons. They are often used to promote learning, increase confidence, and improve communication skills.

Remember that the spiritual symbolism of candle colors is subjective and may vary depending on individual beliefs and practices. Use these meanings as a starting point and explore which colors resonate with your specific intentions and spiritual path. In the words of Turkish playwright and novelist Mehmet Murat Ildan, “What distinguishes the candle from other lights is that it appeals to our soul, not our eyes.”

PRAYER CANDLES

Prayer candles, also known as novena candles, saint candles, or seven-day candles, are tall, cylindrical candles, usually encased in glass and decorated with an image or prayer. They are called seven-day candles because it is customary for them to burn continuously for seven days.

The origin of the seven-day candle can be traced back to Catholicism, where they were used during “novenas,” which are nine days of prayer leading up to a holy day or special event. Over time, the use of these candles has spread beyond Catholicism and into other spiritual and religious practices around the world. They are widely used in Central and South America, but their origins can be traced back to ancient Italy and the Roman cult of the gods.

They are supposed to burn for seven days because the number seven has a special meaning in many religions and spiritual practices. In Christianity, for example, the number seven is associated with creation, rest, and completion. The seven-day period is also believed to represent the seven days of creation in the Bible.

In Catholicism, prayer candles are traditionally used to show reverence for saints and other religious figures. The images on the candles represent the saint’s special power or characteristic, and the candles are often used for specific intentions or requests related to those characteristics. The candles are usually white to represent the divinity and purity of Christ, Mother Mary, and the saints.

A modern trend that is becoming increasingly popular are the so-called custom and celebrity prayer candles. The look, theme and shape of these candles are tied to their purpose and designed to appeal to a modern sensibility. Some are very obvious and even humorous, while others are highly symbolic or esoteric. Some of the more unusual shapes and designs I have come across include:

Adam & Eve. To promote love between couples.
Angels. Spiritual protection.
Book. For learning, wisdom and academic success.
Bottle. For abstinence from all vices.
Car. It is used to open the roads.
Corn. To improve any business.
Dove. To stop negative thinking and obsessing over problems that overwhelm you.
Fist. To promote inner strength, motivation and the will to overcome difficulties.
Garlic. To protect a home or business.
Hands Of The Holy Spirit. To ask the Holy Spirit to intercede for all kinds of requests.
Heart. For love and emotional healing.
Home. To pray for the family.
Keys. For opening doors, especially in finances and employment.
Knot. To ‘untie’ or unravel a particular problem that refuses to go away.
Padlock. To bring movement into a stagnant situation.
Pyramid. To bring harmony and energy into a home or business.
Skull. Looks ominous, but is used to clear the mind.
Sword. Invokes the protection of Archangel Michael.
Tree. To attract prosperity.

Ways To Use Candles In Your Practice

CREATING SACRED SPACE

Candlelight has been used for centuries to create a sacred and tranquil atmosphere. The soft, flickering glow of candles can instantly transform any room or area into a sacred space, inspiring a sense of devotion, peace and serenity. Placing candles in strategic locations around your space will enhance the ambiance and create a sense of comfort, tranquility and protection.

When using candles to set the mood for your spiritual practice, I recommend using scented candles with calming scents such as lavender, sandalwood, or jasmine. These scents help with relaxation and set the stage for a deep and meaningful experience.

MEDITATION & MINDFULNESS

Candlelight greatly enhances meditation and mindfulness practices. The gentle, rhythmic dance of the flame can serve as a focal point, helping to quiet the mind and promote deep relaxation. By gently gazing at the flickering flame, you can enter a state of heightened awareness and inner stillness. The ambient lighting provided by candles can also reduce distractions, allowing individuals to fully immerse themselves in their meditation or mindfulness practice.

Whether used during yoga, breath work, or silent reflection, the presence of candlelight heightens the spiritual experience and fosters a deep connection to the self and the surrounding energy.

INTENTION & MANIFESTATION

Candles are powerful tools for intentional rituals and ceremonies. To harness this power, consider what you hope to achieve and the energy you wish to cultivate, amplify, or direct. Whether it’s peace, clarity, or strength, setting clear intentions is the foundation of all energy work and the driving force behind the manifestation of desires.

It is crucial to focus on a clear and specific intention when doing candle-based energy or manifestation work. The intensity and clarity of your intention infuses or charges the candle with the energy needed to bring about the desired outcome. Through deep concentration and visualization, you can imbue the candle with your desires and goals, creating a powerful catalyst for change.

You can write down your intentions on a piece of paper, meditate on them, visualize them, or simply say them aloud. By doing so, you’re actively shaping the energy you wish to align with or transform. This fundamental step lays the groundwork for a purposeful and meaningful metaphysical practice.

REIKI & ENERGY HEALING

Integrating candles into energy healing practices such as Reiki can greatly enhance the healing experience and outcome. The soft, flickering light of a candle creates a serene, sacred environment that promotes relaxation and allows practitioners to focus their intention and energy.

Used in conjunction with energy healing practices, candles can also serve as focal points for channeling and directing healing energy, enhancing the overall healing experience for both the practitioner and the recipient.

The warm glow of the candle can also provide a sense of calm and comfort during energy healing sessions, fostering a deeper connection and sense of peace.

CHAKRA BALANCING & AURA CLEANSING

In the realm of energy work, candles are often used to help balance the chakras and cleanse the aura. Different colored candles are associated with the seven primary chakras, and by incorporating these specific hues into meditation or energy work, you can focus on aligning and harmonizing the body’s energy centers.

The act of looking at the flame of a candle during meditation can also help to clear and purify the aura, allowing individuals to release negative energy and achieve a heightened state of clarity.

The ritual of lighting a candle can also serve as a symbolic representation of setting intentions for chakra balancing and aura cleansing, and acknowledging the potential for transformation and renewal within oneself.

Proper Candle Care and Maintenance

To ensure a safe and effective experience with candles in your spiritual practice, proper care and maintenance are essential. Trim the wick to about a quarter of an inch (half a centimeter) each time before lighting to prevent uneven burning and excessive flickering.

Keep the wax bath free of debris such as matches or wick trimmings to maintain a clean and even burn. When not in use, store candles in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight to prevent warping or discoloration. Inspect candles regularly for any signs of damage and replace if necessary to prevent potential safety hazards.

Fire Safety and Hazard Prevention

When using candles for spiritual practices or energy work, it’s important to prioritize fire safety and prevent potential hazards. Always place lighted candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces, away from flammable materials such as drapes, papers, or plants.

Avoid leaving candles unattended, especially in rooms with pets or children. Consider using candle holders with a wide, stable base to minimize the risk of tipping. In addition, keep a fire extinguisher or alternative method of fire suppression nearby for added safety and peace of mind.
